The Origin 

At Mourning Roast, our story began with more than a love of coffee. It started with a need for a place where early risers, night shifters and caffeine devotees could feel seen.

We noticed how the hours before sunrise and long after sunset often go unnoticed, and we wanted to create a space for the people who live and work in those moments. So we brewed, we opened our doors at 4 am, and we said: this is for you.

We believe coffee is more than a drink. It is a ritual, a pause in the chaos and a moment of connection in the middle of life’s grind. The aroma of fresh grounds, the hiss of the steam wand and the slow sip of something bold all matter to us. We wanted to create a place where the atmosphere matches the coffee. Loud in personality, calm in spirit, a little rebellious and always inclusive.

Samuel is one half of the Mourning Roast duo, leading operations and the long-game side of the business. AKA the man who turned caffeine dependence into a lifestyle brand, he’s the big-picture thinker, chaos balancer, and professional problem solver keeping the lights on while Brisbane wakes up.

Sam does it all with Chandler-level humour and just enough Joey chaos to keep things human. The definition of Labrador energy — friendly, steady, and always stopping to pat that dog. Powered by coffee, ambition, and the belief that Brisbane deserves better espresso and even better vibes.

Nadine

Nadine is the other half of the Mourning Roast duo and the resident chaos coordinator. Operating at the intersection of structure, creativity, and mild ferality, she brings strong black cat energy to the business. Nadine leads people & culture, food, and brand with a mix of intuition and creative chaos.

She’s curious, creative, and always asking ‘what if?’, living somewhere in the details and the ideas at the same time - while simultaneously thinking about five things at once. She runs entirely on iced coffee, big ideas, and the occasional spiral that somehow turns into a win.
